TalkingTree  ColdFusion MX 7 support for 64-bit platforms

A clarification has been made to this ColdFusion technote. The current support policy can be summarized as

  • ColdFusion MX 7 is supported with a supported 32-bit Java VM running on supported operating systems on 64-bit hardware.
Although, you should read the technote for all the details. Previously, the technote generalized incorrectly that ColdFusion would not run at all on 64-bit platforms.

Can you further clarify "on supported operating systems"? Specifically, does this mean ColdFusion MX 7 is supported on x86_64 and ia64 builds of RHEL4 (i.e. 64-bit Linux) so long as a 32-bit build of a supported JVM is installed?

The technote specifically mentions IA64:

"ColdFusion MX 7 is not supported with IA64 (Itanium) hardware in any configuration, even with a 32-bit Java VM. Itanium is being considered for support in the future."

What about x86_64?

I have ColdFusion 7.0.2 running on CentOS x86_64.

Check out the advise here:

I'm still not 100% clear on whether the x86_64 build of RHEL4 is "officially" supported.

From the technote:

"ColdFusion MX 7 is supported with a supported 32-bit Java VM running on supported operating systems on 64-bit hardware." RHEL4 is a supported OS, and when run on a 32 bit JVM then CF is supported when RHEL4 x86_64.

Thank you for the clarification!

I've been trying to install/run CFmx 7 on my new RHEL 4 x86_64 server. After discovering CF7 doesn't work on 64 bit, I found your post indicating it is supported with a 32-bit Java VM. Does anyone have the version of Java VM this works with????? I've tried a couple different versions, but still no luck.

Also, once Java VM is installed, do I need to reinstall CF7 or should the existing install be okay IF the correct version of Java VM is installed?????

Many thanks. . .

Why won't Macromedia address the 64 bit version? It's been years since the first 64 bit chips arrived.
