San Miguel, founded in 1542, has been proclaimed a national monument by the Mexican government to assure its preservation as a treasured example of Spanish colonial architecture. Built in a mountain valley 6400 ft up, its located 180 miles from Mexico City. From San Miguel you have a 40 mile view across the cactus, mesquite, and small villages towards the hills of the Guanajuato Sierra Madre Range.
